Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the fluid that flows in the system of our air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers. Compared to a human being, they are the blood that circulates in our body. Their ability to absorb the heat and then release it makes it an ideal component in the field of refrigeration. Earlier refrigeration engineers have experimented with hazardous fluids like carbon dioxide, methyl chloride, sulfur dioxide, and ammonia as the refrigerant. But for safety reasons, synthetic CFC was discovered and used as a substitute to the above.
Freon-12, is a registered trademark of E. I. Dupon de Nemours and Company. The liquid is a methane derivative containing two fluorine atoms and no hydrogen, the chemical formula is CCl2F2. It has a boiling point of -29.8 degrees Centigrade. R-12 has been used in the refrigerators, freezers, and car air conditioners for quite some time. And it is now being ban from using because when released into our atmosphere it is depleting our ozone layer.
R-22, with a systematic name Chlorodifluoromethane, also called HCFC-22, is widely used in the air conditioners and commercial freezers. Since it also deplete the ozone layers, it is also being ban from further production. Because global warming was unavoidable, the Montreal Protocol was forged in 1987. Diplomat all over the world convened in Montreal, Quebec, and a treaty was forged which calls for a drastic reductions in the production of CFCs. The nations of European Community also agreed to ban the production of all CFCs by the end of 1990. Alternatives and blends which are not harmful to our ozone layers are already being used now, like R-134a; it has a boiling point of -26.3 Fahrenheit. It is to replace R-12.
